Slow Reading Group

We host a weekly continental philosphy reading group at Shardeloes Road. In the group we read texts that we find too hard to read alone. We read them together, out loud, in person. The format is: no advance preparation, just come & meet weekly, and read from the book, paragraph by paragraph; then discuss until everyone is ready to move on to the next paragraph. Over the course of the previous two years, we have read small chunks from Hegel's "Phenomenology" and Deleuze's "Difference and Repetition".

It was a very slow process, but we think this slowness made it possible to get much deeper into the rhythms and patterns of the thought we were trying to understand. It also allows the group to spend time getting to know and contributing to each others' ways of thinking and reading, without pressure of time or outcome.

We are currently reading Adorno's "Negative Dialectics".
